On the outskirts of the Great Karoo, just off the N1 before Laingsburg, lies the Victorian village of Matjiesfontein, a place that time has forgotten. Seriously a one horse town, the horse in this case being a vintage double-decker Beefeater bus straight from London, its keeper John, a player of the piano and trumpet, ghost whisperer and all round merry-maker. Step back in time and enjoy some fortification at the classic Laird’s Arms pub, soak up the history at the Transport or Victoriana museums or stay for the weekend in the majestic old Lord Milner Hotel. Whatever you choose to do, spending an hour, a lunch or a weekend, its’ a wonderful experience with loads of old world charm.
